Bionic Reading Converter

Bionic Reading is a reading method developed by Swiss typographic designer Renato Cassel that highlights the first portion of each word in bold. The human brain tends to complete words using context and pattern recognition, so bolding the initial letters — called the fixation point — lets your eye glide faster across the text without losing comprehension.

This converter applies the bionic fixation effect to any text you paste in. Adjust the fixation level (1–5) to control how much of each word is bolded: lower values bold only one or two letters, while higher values bold up to 80% of the word. The output is rendered as a live preview and also exposed as copyable HTML with <b> tags for use in web pages, emails, or documents.

How it works

For each word of length N, bold the first ceil(N × f) characters, where f is the fixation fraction: level 1 → 0.20, level 2 → 0.35, level 3 → 0.50, level 4 → 0.65, level 5 → 0.80. Punctuation and whitespace are preserved unchanged.

Use cases

  • Improving reading speed for long articles or research papers
  • Helping readers with dyslexia or attention difficulties stay focused
  • Generating bionic-formatted HTML for blog posts or newsletters
  • Studying foreign-language texts where word recognition is slower
  • Preparing accessible reading materials for educational content
