Drywall Calculator

Drywall (gypsum board) is the standard interior wall and ceiling material for residential and commercial construction. This calculator estimates the number of sheets you need by dividing your total square footage — either entered directly or derived from room dimensions — by the coverage area of your chosen sheet size (4×8 ft = 32 sq ft, or 4×12 ft = 48 sq ft), then applies a waste factor to account for cuts, corners, and inevitable breakage.

Beyond sheet count, the calculator also estimates two essential consumables: drywall screws (approximately one per square foot of installed board) and joint compound (roughly 0.5 lb per square foot, covering all three coats — tape, bed coat, and finish coat). These rough estimates help you plan a single materials run before the project starts, reducing costly mid-job trips to the hardware store.

How it works

Sheets needed = ⌈(Area × (1 + waste%/100)) ÷ sheet area⌉. Screws ≈ area with waste × 1 screw/ft². Joint compound ≈ area × 0.5 lb/ft² (all coats).

Use cases

  • Estimating drywall materials for a new room addition or renovation
  • Planning basement finishing projects with multiple rooms
  • Calculating ceiling drywall for a full-floor remodel
  • Comparing 4×8 vs 4×12 sheet sizes to minimize waste and seams
  • Budgeting screws and joint compound alongside sheet counts for a single supply run
