Mulch, Soil & Gravel Calculator
Calculating the right amount of bulk landscaping material — mulch, topsoil, gravel, or sand — prevents costly over-ordering and frustrating short-falls. Enter your coverage area dimensions (length × width) and the desired depth, and this calculator instantly converts those measurements into cubic yards and cubic meters, the standard units used by landscaping suppliers.
The tool also estimates how many bulk bags of a chosen size you will need and, if you enter a price per cubic yard, computes your total material cost. Whether you are mulching a flower bed, filling a raised garden, or laying a gravel pathway, accurate volume math saves time and money on every project.
How it works
Volume (ft³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12. Volume (yd³) = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27. Volume (m³) = Volume (yd³) × 0.764555. For metric inputs: Volume (m³) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Depth (cm) ÷ 100.
Use cases
- Determining how many cubic yards of mulch to order for garden beds
- Calculating topsoil volume needed to fill or level a raised garden bed
- Estimating gravel or crushed stone for a driveway or pathway
- Planning sand quantity for a children's sandbox or paver base
- Budgeting landscaping material costs before placing a bulk delivery order
